National Town Builders Association Fall Roundtable October 20 - 23, 2016
Sponsored by American Fidelity
Semi-annually, the NTBA has their pre-roundtable and roundtable conference, bringing together industry specialists and town builder members with the overall purpose to advance the town building industry. This event is specifically designed to bring members from all over to share their best standards, expertise, and insights that have been generated from their town development work. These members supply their proven skills in problem solving, quality improvement, and energizing the visions to execute the top principles in town building.
Brown Design had the opportunity to join the Fall Roundtable event in Oklahoma City and Carlton Landing with the theme being, “the Evolution of Place.”
The Pre-Roundtable Conference was held in Oklahoma City, to view the development and redevelopment of public and private spaces. This transformation has had an encouragement on economic growth, enhancement on the quality of life within the city, and vast improvement on neighborhoods.
The Wheeler District
We headed over to the Wheeler District just across the river from downtown. This area will be the next large growth area for the City. Currently, plans are underway and the property will take several years to build out. In the mean time, a refurbished ferris wheel anchors the site and provides a starting brand for the District.
Carlton Landing
Carlton Landing is a town that has created a new standard for sustainable development that is able to foster a strong sense of community, while being financially viable, ecologically sensitive and socially constructive. World renowned town planner; Andres Duany (DPZ), developed the master plan with Tom Low being lead designer and bring Light Imprint Design Standards to competition as well as his mode small school house concept.
The purpose of New Urbanism is to show that it is the answer to the failed experiments of suburban sprawl. It offers a logical process of designing places around the people as opposed to the automobile. Carlton Landing encourages a healthy lifestyle to residents and visitors with the town’s walkability, ecological stewardship and sustainability within their building process, while all together creates energy efficient homes. This new standard for sustainable community building, is what reduces our carbon footprint, while keeping the natural world around us healthy and beautiful.
The NTBA is committed to successfully developing neighborhoods that are environmentally, socially and economically sustainable while also creating value. The group is committed to helping each other grow as development professional and to also foster the next generation of developers.
