Coastal Living: The New Village Homes of Abbey Row

The Lowcountry Region is easily known for being an assemblage of history, culture and it’s natural beauty along the stretch of South Carolina and Georgia. Holding the coastal town of Habersham, South Carolina

-minutes outside of historic downtown, Beaufort, the town holds the tastes and traditions of living in the south.

With receiving the “Best Neighborhood Design in America” award by National Association of Home Builders, and selected as South Carolina’s premiere Southern Living Inspired Community in 2015 by Southern Living Magazine editors, the architecture is the most authentic element of Lowcountry. The elegant design throughout the town’s Central Marketplace, takes us through the streets that contain the classical details and proportions of enduring architecture that is aesthetically pleasing. Aside from the construction, the safe and pleasant streetscapes allow for people to walk through the neighborhood, to the docks, and downtown. In essence; walking distance from everything which promotes an engaging and healthy lifestyle for the community.

The new Village Homes built along Abbey Row are a prime example of this lifestyle. Being built in a T3-T4 transect zone, these Single-Family Units provide the feel for living downtown, and living in a neighborhood. As all three houses exteriors are traditional based designs -the identical front porch with ceiling fans, not only serves as a popular feature, but is also aesthetically pleasing and a trademark for Front Light Building Company. Along with that, since the plans are designed to fit on narrow alley-fed lots, it provides parking behind the homes, benefitting the lot to be a more compound arrangement.

Getting a look inside; the home is composed of three bedrooms, two-three full baths, one half-bathroom, and space between 1,800 sq. ft. and 1,900 sq. ft. With certain areas of the house being designed as the most active and social spaces; the flexibility in the rooms allow for the space to be converted in several ways, such as for entertainment, or even comfort. Another key feature of these homes; the high ceilings. Living in a region where the weather is warm almost year round, the benefits to having high ceilings gives spatial quality to the room, allowing for the space to be easier to cool-energy efficient.

Entering in on the smaller details, the custom moldings, built-ins and cabinets show the distinctive features of the home, yet maintain the cohesive theme. These top-quality structures were constructed with indigenous materials, textures and colors that are based off of the home’s character and sustainability.

The new Village Homes on Abbey Row fit the traditional neighborhood concept, and take on their own individual form that composes and reinforces the identity of the community. The exterior and interior designs are key reflection of the climate and location, and a demonstration of our enjoyment of producing great traditional design work at Brown Design.
