Beaufort, South Carolina is a city that offers a historic downtown and Lowcountry feel for residents and visitors. Declared by Southern Living Magazine as a “Small Town We Love,” it is an area that offers a variety of real-estate. Along with being well known for sustaining the historic character of its homes that are pristinely designed and compose the aesthetically pleasing neighborhoods.
Brown Design was selected by the City as a responsible and creative development team for the investment and redevelopment of land that is located near Basil Green Park, and downtown Beaufort. Lafayette Street was a property that offered the advantages for infill development on a parcel that would add public civic space & to the City and also add new cottages.

As it came down to planning and executing, we were expected to redevelop this parcel to complement the community, with a highlight on the livability, beauty and neighborhood context. On the unoccupied .895-acre parcel of land, we were able to propose six cottages, a new rear lane and a small pocket park.
The cottages are comprised of two core floor plans; a two bedroom and a three bedroom that range from 1000-1300 sqft. These core plans are then each given unique exterior elements and detailing so that each house reads much different from the others. The elements range from multiple porch and stoop options to more classical detailing and formal roof lines. This is a great example of our approach to designing builder / developer architecture than is a great balance of efficient and great design.
