Traditional architecture has long served as the foundation for well designed buildings. The principles of beauty and proportion that were explained by Vitruvius are still being applied today. However, as architecture has evolved there seems to be a shift in focus, with more recent designs reflecting a change in the quality and execution. When comparing modern day works to that of Palladio, Brunelleschi, Alberti, and many other great architects we are able to see the change in approach particularly in the level of attention to detail and craftsmanship. It is noticeable that there is an opportunity here to rediscover the passion that has historically defined remarkable architecture. Rather than focusing on speed and amount of construction, architects and builders have the potential to create meaningful architecture with quality design.

In today's day and age where information is more accessible than ever we have an exciting opportunity to use these resources to better our work. Novels such as Get Your House Right by Marianne Cusato and Ben Pentreath as well as Classical Architecture: A Complete Handbook by Robert Adam and those written by Francis D.K. Ching are fantastic sources to reach for that contain information that can guide us in the right direction. In addition, rather than repeating certain designs, we can draw inspiration from past works and innovate new designs that encourage connection. Find precedents that inspire you, by doing so you are creating a foundation that will allow you to design thoughtful architecture.

The digital technology we now have access to has significantly shifted the way architecture is created, making attention to detail and hand drafting seem less crucial. Software programs from AutoCAD to Revit are now able to handle intricate details like line weights and object placement. In turn, reducing the need for precise and time consuming work that once defined architectural craftsmanship. Nevertheless, this advancement also presents a challenge to maintain the importance of traditional craftsmanship. The challenge itself lies in preserving high standards of craftsmanship while embracing the efficiency and capabilities of modern technology. Moving forward, it’s important to find ways to integrate traditional techniques into contemporary designs.

By striving for greatness in our work, architects and builders can create spaces that are not only functional but meaningful, places that will help to strengthen connections within our communities and day to day lives. It is important we use our renewed passion to inspire us in creating the type of architecture that people consider exceptional.
