The question on housing in cities, is whether cottages are the next urban infill trend. They are, and they are as popular as ever. No matter what the market point of the finished product. Cottages are a great way to diversify a neighborhood and should be included in many if not most neighborhoods. They should be a go to unit for developers along with the traditional single family home and the small multi-family or “missing middle” units.
Cottages are typically smaller than the typical single family home, and they are a good choice for many infill strategies. Infill development strives to complete the community fabric, and with the reduction of land, these cottages bring an interest within the infill development on all the opportunities brought in from central and suburban cities that are a lot alike. These units also often may be cluster in a cottage court arrangement which provides a semi-public common space.
Brown Design has produced a collection of single family house plans over the past 19 years, and as a result; it has lead our studio to creating great traditional neighborhoods and place making.
We make plans that are focused on fitting into a traditional neighborhood, whether it is a new urbanist development, or even historic/urban infill. While the exteriors are composed of traditional based designs, proportions and detailing, majority of our plans are designed to be placed on narrow alley fed lots that provide parking in the rear, or even fit to be used on a larger lot that allow for rotation to form a more compound arrangement.

The design intent of our single family plans are to display timeless proportion and scale to the home. Each one of our plans is unique in how the exterior elevations are pleasing in proportion, also in the scale of the interior rooms. Most of our plans focus on a more modern and open floor plan to provide flexibility in how the room can be converted in several ways. While many of our plans offer a variety of options, they can be easily modified.

Many of our plans reflect the traditional nature of our practice on the exterior design that conveys climate and location, as well as the southern or south east vernacular style. Simply what it was originally designed for.
Here at Brown Design, we enjoy producing great traditional design work and our ability to create, as well as contribute to creating traditional neighborhoods and place making.
Our Willowbend Cottage is an infill project for residential housing located in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The goal of this housing type is to provide regionally appropriate housing typologies as prototype units to foster a better design and urbanism. The architectural work is starting with the first 14’ wide cottage units underway and another group of 80+ units in the concept design stage. The goal is to provide a series of repeatable core floor plans that can be re-elevated easily in an Arkansas vernacular to create a vibrate walking neighborhood while still retaining the buildability of multiple repeat units.
At Brown Design, our goal is to create beautiful buildings for great places. And when it comes to infill residential projects, we strive to develop programs that focus on crafting complete and well functioning neighborhoods.
